My Best Tips for Healthy Hair After Swimming in a Pool or ocean

Do you have color-treated blonde hair like me? 🌸 Then you probably know the struggle…

After swimming in a pool, blonde hair can turn dull, dry, or even get that dreaded green tint. But chlorine isn’t just tough on blondes – it damages all hair types by stripping away natural oils. The good news? With a few simple tips, you can protect your hair and keep it shiny and healthy all summer long.

1. Wet Your Hair Before Swimming

Always rinse your hair with clean water before you jump into the pool. When your hair is already wet, it absorbs less chlorine. This simple hack works for all hair types and is the first step to avoid chlorine damage.

2. Apply a Moisturizing Hair Mask

A hydrating hair mask acts as a barrier and protects your strands from harsh chemicals. If you have blonde or bleached hair, this step is extra important to prevent it from turning green in chlorine.

💡 One of my personal favorites is the Moroccanoil Intense Hydrating Mask. It leaves my hair soft, smooth, and nourished even after hours in the pool.

3. Rinse + Condition Right After Swimming

As soon as you’re done swimming, rinse your hair thoroughly with fresh water. Follow up with a conditioner or a nourishing mask to restore lost moisture. The faster you wash out chlorine, the less chance it has to dry out or discolor your hair.

Bonus Protection Tips

  • Use a swim cap if you’re swimming regularly. It’s not the most glamorous, but it protects your hair 100%.
  • Apply natural oils like coconut or argan oil before swimming. Oils coat the hair shaft and minimize chlorine absorption.
  • Clarifying shampoo once a week helps remove chlorine build-up, especially if you’re in the pool often.
